Who is best to see, what the difference between Psychologists and Mental Health Social Workers ?
If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, you can see either a Psychologist or a Mental Health Social Worker (MHSW). We have both types of practitioners at UFlourish.
So what’s the difference?
Both Psychologists and MHSWs in Australia are qualified to support people going through mental health challenges, emotional distress, or difficult life transitions. They’re both eligible to provide services that are covered by Medicare and Private Health insurance, making help more affordable and accessible.
Psychologists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, and more. They use a range of proven therapies to help people understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Their work often focuses on individual therapy, and they’re especially skilled in understanding how mental health conditions develop and how best to treat them. Psychologists are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and follow strict professional guidelines.
Accredited MHSWs are social workers with extra training in mental health and counselling. MHSWs are registered with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Like psychologists, they can provide a range of therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and EMDR, they can also undertake a number of assessments and write reports. Many are also often trained in couples or family therapy. What sets MHSWs apart is their focus on the bigger picture – they don’t just look at what’s happening inside a person’s mind, they may also consider the social and environmental issues that are affecting someone’s well-being, like housing, finances, relationships, or discrimination. They may combine emotional support with practical help or advocacy, which can be especially useful for people dealing with complex life situations. MHSWs also follow strict professional guidelines.
If you’re looking for someone who can also help with practical challenges or broader life issues alongside therapy, a mental health social worker may be a great choice.
Both professionals are highly skilled and compassionate, and choosing between them often depends on what kind of support you’re looking for. Often it will matter much more that you fit with your therapist’s personality rather than their title. Both types of therapists can offer highly effective and caring psychotherapy to you. If you want a more clinical focus or a diagnosis, a psychologist might be the right fit.

The Australian Association of Social Workers recommends fees of up to $289 for a 50-minute session, while the Australian Psychological Society recommends up to $311. However, at Uflourish, our individual counselling rates are aligned with NDIS pricing, ensuring accessible and transparent support.
A doctor's referral is NOT required to access Uflourish's therapies. However, for Medicare rebates to apply you will need to be referred by a doctor under a GP Mental Health Care Plan.
If you are insured with a Private Health Fund and have Extras cover, you may be eligible for a rebate. To determine your eligibility, call your fund.
Please note: You cannot obtain a health fund rebate AND a Medicare rebate in the same session.
According to the Allied Health Fees for your State Scheme, there are no out-of-pocket fees for your sessions, whether you are seeking couples counselling, individual counselling, or telehealth therapy, as these services are fully covered by Workcover.
To be eligible to receive support under DVA, you will need a referral from your GP. If you are eligible, there is no cost to you; this is fully covered by DVA. Access to counselling sessions, which includes both individual counselling and couples counselling, depends on the type of DVA card you hold and the mental health condition involved. If you have a Gold Card, you’re entitled to fully funded psychology treatment for any condition, with no additional approvals or condition links required. If you hold a DVA White Card, psychological support is available only for mental health conditions that DVA has formally accepted. This means your condition must be diagnosed and linked to your military service. To start treatment, including options for telehealth therapy, you’ll generally need a referral from your GP. They can help you find a DVA-registered psychologist and prepare any necessary paperwork so that you can begin therapy with confidence.
According to the NDIS Price Guide, individuals seeking support can access a variety of services, such as individual counselling, couples counselling, and options for telehealth therapy.

Our preferred payment methods for services such as couples counselling, individual counselling, and telehealth therapy include credit card, debit card, and EFTPOS. In exceptional circumstances, we can also accept bank transfers (EFT) and cash, with the correct amount appreciated.
If you need help navigating life's challenges and want to talk to a professional, whether through couples counselling or individual counselling, we are here for you. It doesn't matter where you are in Australia, as telehealth therapy is available with afterhours appointments. We are Workcover approved in NSW, VIC, and SA.
